When I was 20 years old I was working as a trainee mental health social worker while living with students and enjoying their lifestyle. My priorities at the time were to attend music concerts, dances and have sociable evenings in the pub rather than a good diet and exercise. Not surprisingly, I suffered repeated viruses and infections. I had 6 courses of anti-biotics in as many months and then contracted meningitis which would almost certainly have been terminal but for a nurse colleague recognising my symptoms and arranging my urgent admission to hospital. In isolation I slowly acknowledged to myself that my signature was clearly at the bottom of my life- threatening illness. The gift in this challenge for me was that I started to take much more responsibility for my personal health rather than expecting pharmaceutical drugs to cure all my ailments. Ten years later I retired from social work to set up my own health food / wholefood premises. This change in career direction introduced me to the world of complimentary and alternative medicine and 7 years later I qualified as a professional homoeopath.
Over 30 years of practice I have become experienced in treating a wide range of ailments including serious and life-threatening conditions. I have worked in health shop clinics, GP practices and spent 12 years with a Bristol charity working with families affected by various life-threatening illnesses. After suffering personal bereavements, a divorce and prolonged work and personal stress I developed cancer which had spread to several other organs and was at stage 4. Again, after another urgent hospital admission lasting 10 weeks, I remembered that I was responsible for my own terminal state over 3 stones underweight and very weak. I am very grateful to the NHS for their diagnosis, care and 2 major life-saving operations. Equally important, I feel, is that I understood my part in the process and once again I belatedly took responsibility for my own health. I treated myself homoeopathically for everything except the surgery along with a simple healthy diet and regular daily exercise. I understood that my own negative thoughts and feelings combined with self-neglect had contributed significantly to ‘my cancer’. Now 5 years on I would like to help others to help themselves with their serious health issues through a combination of self-understanding, natural holistic medicine, diet and exercise.
Homoeopathy and holistic medicine, for me, has been a journey of self-discovery. It has given me the clarity, understanding and inner strength to face up to difficult truths about myself and where necessary to make changes for my greater good.
